Ah yes here it is, the obligatory , why are kids fat report. So why are kids fat now? Same old song different verse.
Kids today are fat because ;
They don’t get enough exercise.
They don’t eat enough vegetables.
They don’t eat enough fruit.
They spend too much time in front of the TV, the computer, listening to music, watching movies.
Well allow me to weigh in (punny, sorry) on this most corpulent (sorry again) of subjects.
Kids may be heavier than before but truly I am not seeing it. The percentage seems to be pretty much the same. Of course the standards of what is now obese have changed considerably. If you have any meat on your bones, if your ribs are not sticking out of your chest, if your face doesn’t look like a skeleton with flesh stretched over it, you are officially obese. Let us however try to make some sense out of the mish mash of opinion offered today.
Kids do not get enough exercise- duh, they spend more than eight hours of daylight sitting in a class room. If they do have PE it is so structured (to prevent injury or any fun breaking out) it is simply another box to check off during the day. “His majesty, the one” wants them to spend even more time in school. Here’s a question that needs to be asked. If school is such a great substitute for family why is it that children are fatter, more stressed, more violent, more disrespectful and less happy? Maybe it’s because children were NEVER designed to spend 33% of their day away from their parents. While I am sure some children are more than happy to spend as much time away from home as they can (since their parents would never allow them to look, act and speak as they do at school), most dislike school and it’s constant attack on the mores, morals and teaching of parents in the home. Most children today spend less time in the home than ever before. An hour in the morning, 4 hours at night and then it’s off to bed, so they can get up and do it again in the morning, that’s if the kids get “home” before 6 at night. Many don’t.
Now to the crux of the article above. Kids don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables. After 30 years on the Mommy Track I can tell you that the child who likes fruits and veggies is the minority not the majority. I fed my babies vegetables and kept them away from junk. Guess what? They liked the junk better. They never met a sugar they didn’t like. I had a Gestalt moment (little light bulb over the head) many years ago. We had moved back to the states from the Far East and missed the whole “white sugar is the devil” fad and my husband attended a university on the GI Bill. The mothers in this area alarmed by the sugar -ADD controversy had decided to remove all sugar, fat and taste from their children’s food. It got so bad that the local college TV station had a respected Peditrician on to council parents. Can you guess what he said? Mothers your children need calories to grow, they need a certain amount of fat in their diets. If your child does not have a medical condition, give them a cookie once and in while. Sugar is NOT the devil, fat is NOT evil. Moderation in all things should be your slogan. Children in the area were ill less , were happier and healthier with a little meat on their bones. We see daily on Television the emaciated bodies of children around the world. These children die from the effects of malnourishment every day. Surely here in the US we can do better. These are not little adults, they do not have the same needs as adults and government officials, their lackeys in the media nor their collusionists in the health care cabal, are not the ones who get to tell parents how to raise their children Yet!
School lunches in most cases are deplorable. They are tasteless, cold and unappetizing. They are usually served by ladies who don’t give a hoot, because all they are paid to do is microwave or remove things from trucks. Nothing is cooked there anymore, you could get better nutrition from a handful of vitamins. So add even more of the same, over cooked or cold broccoli, limp salads, apple, oranges et al and what do you get. The need for a larger trash can. How are you going to force children to eat these things? Starve them until they do, our new social order on display. By the time they are adults they will simply allow government to take over their lives, because it is exactly what they’re used to.
You want kids to be healthier, happier, and more stable? Find a way to get one parent back in the home and send them to school 3 hours less. Many children leave their homes in the dark and come home in the dark. That may be fine for adults (it’s not of course – human beings need sunlight, hence the depression problems we have to day). Cut out the misc. days off and end school on a reasonable date. Allow them to be children instead of forcing them to be adults.
I don’t know, we haven’t been as successful as home schoolers so far. At this point it couldn’t hurt.
